Such a small word, but an overwhelming emotion! Fear has a way of changing things, especially for our children.  At night, a shadow can turn into a creepy monster!  Or the ticking of a clock becomes a giant’s footsteps and their hearts climb into their throats.  Sometimes, they can freeze or feel powerless, and it’s all due to fear!!

Psalm 23:4 tells us that when we walk through dark valleys, that we shouldn’t fear, because God is with us.

Isaiah 41:10 also tells us not to fear, because God will strengthen and help us.

We must remind our children (and ourselves) of what we already know – God is in control and is all-powerful.  From the beginning of creation, we have seen the power of God.  God is our ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). He is a safe place when we need protection from something.  There is no situation we will ever face that is out of God’s control, so the best place to be is right with Him.

We can teach our children to pray a “praise prayer” wherever they are. They can tell God how thankful they are for His awesome power to protect them from harm. They can thank Him for always being with them (even in the darkest and scariest times).  Then they can relax and trust God.

As a family talk about things that make your children fearful. Talk about things they can talk to God about in their “praise prayer.”  Spend time reading Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 46:1, and Philippians 4:6-7 together.
